New Play Strategy

Three Rivers District Council is currently preparing a new strategy for play spaces owned and maintained by the Council. The Council proposes the following principles as the basis for the strategy:

  • Access to play – children should have access to a variety of play spaces.
  • Community co-design – local communities will have the opportunity to take part in public consultation to share their ideas when play areas are due to be developed.
  • High quality, playful spaces – play areas will include the opportunity for a variety of play opportunities through equipment features, play co-operation (imaginative/creative play), inclusive play and natural play.
  • Financially sustainable – resources will be allocated in a responsible and resourceful manner, focusing spend on the well-used sites, whilst ensuring smaller sites remain at a high standard.

You can view the draft play strategy under the documents tab on the right hand side of the project page.

Focused Resources

Three Rivers District Council has identified 4 strategic play areas within Three Rivers, where resources should be focused. These 4 sites will be refurbished approximately every 10 years, with approximately 50% of the annual revenue budget allocated to ensure these sites remain at a high standard.

The 4 sites have been identified due to their usage and population catchment. As well used sites, they are more likely to require more frequent maintenance and refurbishment.

The 4 sites are Ebury Play Area (Rickmansworth Aquadrome), Barton Way Play Area (Croxley Green), Hayling Road Play Area (South Oxhey) and Leavesden Country Park Play Area (Abbots Langley).

Play and Nature

A focus of the play strategy is to bring children and their families closer to nature. Encouraging children to be inquisitive about nature will support their learning and give them an appreciation and respect for the world around them. The play strategy also considers the impact of Climate Change and the introduction of tree planting to create shaded spaces.

19.

Do you agree that play spaces should incorporate natural features such as grassy mounds, trees, wildflower areas, bug hotels, logs and play panels with information about local wildlife?
